Hate Crimes Against Muslims Surge in Ottawa

The Ottawa Police Service reported a concerning rise in hate-motivated incidents targeting the Muslim community so far in 2024, Ottawa Citizen reported yesterday.

According to the police, there have been 15 incidents reported against Muslims this year, up from only 7 at the same time in 2023 – a more than 100% increase.

This comes amid the ongoing Israel-Hamas conflict, which has seen a broader spike in hate crimes, with a 100% rise in incidents against the Jewish community as well.

The police are working to investigate all reported incidents and encourage victims to come forward. Community leaders have condemned the rise in Islamophobia and called for stronger action to protect Muslim residents.
