Sixty companies culprit for half of world’s plastic pollution, survey reveals

A recent study found that less than 60 multinational companies are accountable for over half of the world’s plastic pollution, with five of them responsible for a quarter of it, the Guardian reported.

According to the article published yesterday, the researchers found that an increase in plastic production directly leads to an increase in plastic pollution.

The study, conducted by an international team over five years, revealed that the majority of the collected plastic waste was single-use packaging for food, beverages, and tobacco.

The team behind the study say their findings emphasise the urgent need for a globally binding treaty focusing on production measures.
