Devastating Floods in Tanzania Claim 58 Lives, Prompting Government Action

In the past two weeks, Tanzania has been ravaged by deadly floods, resulting in the loss of 58 lives due to heavy rains and subsequent flooding, Al Jazeera reported.

The government has declared plans to address the issue through significant infrastructure projects, including the construction of 14 dams aimed at preventing future disasters, the news agency mentioned.

Government spokesman, Mobhare Matinyi, revealed that the country’s coastal region has been severely impacted, with 11 reported deaths.

In total, over 126,000 individuals have been affected by the flooding, and more than 75,000 farms have suffered damage in the coastal and Morogoro areas, located approximately 200km west of the economic capital, Dar-es-Salaam.

In response to the crisis, essential supplies, including food, have been distributed to those affected. This dire situation follows a similar catastrophe just four months ago, where at least 63 people perished in floods and landslides in northern Tanzania.

The country’s efforts to mitigate the impact of the floods and prevent future disasters are crucial as Tanzania continues to grapple with the aftermath of this natural catastrophe.
