More than 70 Rohingya dead or missing after boat overturns off Indonesia’s Aceh
Over 70 Rohingya are “presumed dead or missing” after their boat capsized off the coast of Indonesia’s Aceh province, with 75 people being rescued, according to the UNHCR refugee agency.
The alert was raised when fishermen rescued six migrants who were standing on the hull of the capsized boat, Reuters reported.
Rohingya have been leaving Myanmar due to being denied citizenship and subjected to abuse. In 2023, at least 569 Rohingya died or went missing while trying to flee Myanmar or Bangladesh, marking the highest toll since 2014, as reported by UNHCR in January.
