Islamophobia reaching ‘alarming levels’, UN experts warn
UN independent experts issued a warning on Friday, the International Day to Combat Islamophobia, highlighting a global escalation in acts of harassment, violence, and incitement based on religion or belief, including against Muslims.
They emphasized the rise in religious intolerance and called for strengthened international efforts to promote tolerance and peace.
In their statement, the experts condemned hate groups and state actors for undermining respect for diverse religions, discriminating, and violating human rights.
These experts called on all states to respond to religious hatred based on universal values and legal frameworks.
Particular concerns were expressed about public burnings of the Holy Qur’an, restrictions during Ramadan, and attacks on Muslim minorities globally.
The experts called for protection of human rights and solidarity with those facing discrimination and violence for their religion or belief.
