EU lays out plan to cut greenhouse emissions by 90% by 2040

The European Commission has proposed a plan for the European Union to slash net greenhouse gas emissions by 90 percent by 2040, ahead of EU elections.

The proposal faces opposition from farmers and political challenges, with concerns about shrinking incomes and rising costs.

The target has been set in order to achieve a balance between the emission of polluting gases and their absorption in the atmosphere by 2050.

The increase in the concentration of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere causes global warming and the occurrence of destructive climate phenomena such as droughts, floods, storms and other natural disasters.

With the aim of neutralizing carbon by 2050, the European Union has launched various programs in the field of investing in renewable energy, improving energy efficiency, and developing carbon capture and storage technologies.
