30m tonnes of ice lost per hour in Greenland, study reveals
A new study has revealed that the Greenland ice cap is losing an average of 30 million tonnes of ice per hour due to the climate crisis, which is 20% more than previously thought.
The additional freshwater pouring into the north Atlantic from Greenland’s ice loss could potentially trigger the collapse of ocean currents known as the Atlantic meridional overturning circulation (Amoc), with severe consequences for humanity.
The study, published in the journal Nature, used artificial intelligence techniques and satellite photos to analyze the retreat of glaciers in Greenland since 1985, revealing a trillion tonnes of lost ice.
