UN-Habitat Calls for Action on Textile Waste Ahead of World Cleanup Day
——————————–
The United Nations Human Settlements Program (UN-Habitat) has issued a call to action to address the growing issue of textile waste, which it says is a significant threat to sustainable urban development, Xinhua reported. The alert comes ahead of World Cleanup Day 2025, which will focus on this often-overlooked source of pollution.
During a recent debate held in Nairobi, policymakers, youth leaders, waste picker associations, and circular fashion designers convened to discuss the problem. Participants noted that the culture of fast fashion and throwaway consumption is not only fueling waste and pollution but also contributing to inequality.
Anaclaudia Rossbach, the executive director of UN-Habitat, emphasized that tackling textile waste requires a systemic change to protect both people and the environment. The organization highlighted that this year’s World Cleanup Day theme is “Tackling Textile and Fashion Waste Through Circular Fashion.” To celebrate, over 100 cleanup events are planned to take place globally.
