A 5.8 magnitude earthquake struck the Marmaris region in southwestern Turkey early Tuesday, resulting in the death of a teenager and injuring dozens, Arab News reported.

The 14-year-old girl died from a panic attack, and approximately 70 people were injured in Mugla province as they sought safety, Interior Minister Ali Yerlikaya reported on X. No buildings were initially reported as destroyed.

The quake occurred at 2:17 a.m. (2317 GMT Monday), about 10 kilometers (6 miles) off the coast of Marmaris, according to the AFAD disaster agency.

Yerlikaya stated, “In Fethiye, a 14-year-old girl named Afranur Gunlu was hospitalized due to a panic attack but sadly passed away despite all medical efforts.”

Marmaris Governor Idris Akbiyik told local media that seven individuals were receiving treatment for injuries sustained after jumping from windows or balconies in panic, but no serious structural damage was reported.

Turkey lies on major fault lines, making earthquakes common. In 2023, a devastating 7.8 magnitude earthquake killed over 53,000 people in Turkey and caused widespread destruction across 11 southern and southeastern provinces. Additionally, more than 6,000 people died in northern Syria due to the same disaster.
