Mosques in Türkiye Display Mahya Messages Emphasizing Family Values

In the second half of Ramadan, mosques across Türkiye showcased illuminated mahya messages highlighting family values as part of the “Year of the Family” initiative, Daily Sabah reported. The Ministry of Family and Social Services announced that these messages, including phrases like “Family is the foundation of society” and “Our family, our future,” aim to emphasize the importance of family during this sacred month.
Family and Social Services Minister Mahinur Özdemir Göktaş stated that Ramadan renews ancient values and traditions, merging the mahya tradition with family-centric messages. She expressed hopes that these illuminated messages would inspire hearts and communities.
Mahayas, an Ottoman tradition, convey spiritual and social themes, especially during Ramadan. Türkiye has declared 2025 as the “Year of the Family,” focusing on strengthening family values and addressing demographic challenges. This government-led initiative will introduce financial support, social policies to enhance family cohesion, and incentives for marriage and child-rearing, promoting a resilient society centered on family well-being.
