AI’s Transformative Role in Journalism Explored at ABNA-SE Conference in Istanbul

Leaders in the media industry convened in Istanbul for the Association of Balkan News Agencies – Southeast Europe (ABNA-SE) conference, focusing on the impact of artificial intelligence (AI) on journalism, Anadolu Agency reported on Wednesday.

The session, titled “Navigating AI and Media,” featured insights from Anadolu’s AI advisor Remzi Duzagac, who emphasized the need to embrace AI as it fundamentally transforms lives and media practices.

Duzagac highlighted AI’s potential to enhance user interfaces and automate content generation across multiple languages. Yakup Sivka, Anadolu’s Technology & Innovation Director, noted that AI will significantly affect the media sector, aiming to improve news production speed and content quality while generating revenue through AI products.

In a subsequent panel, Elmir Huremovic, general manager of Bosnia and Herzegovina’s Federation News Agency (FENA), likened AI to groundbreaking innovations such as fire and the Internet, while cautioning against challenges to traditional media ownership. Branka-Gabriela Vojvodic, director general of the Croatian News Agency (HINA), raised concerns about the future of journalism, stressing the importance of human oversight in AI applications to preserve critical thinking and empathy.

It should be mentioned that the conference was part of the 32nd ABNA-SE General Assembly.
