Post-election violence leaves one dead, four injured in southeast Turkey
Clashes erupted in the predominantly Kurdish region of Siirt, Turkey, between supporters of President Erdogan’s AK Party and the opposition DEVA Party, resulting in the death of the brother of the DEVA candidate for mayor and injuries to four others.
Protests also occurred in other southeastern provinces of Turkey following the prevention of the pro-Kurdish DEM party’s newly elected mayor from taking office in Van, and the announcement of a re-run vote in Sanilurfa’s Hilvan district.
Erdogan’s ruling party lost the recent elections in Turkey after chief political rival Ekrem Imamoglu of the CHP was re-elected as mayor of Istanbul with 51.1% of the votes, while nationwide, the CHP won the most votes, with 37.7%.
