Macau Accelerates Halal Tourism Push to Attract Muslim Visitors

Macau is accelerating its bid to attract Muslim travelers by introducing a halal certification program and enhancing Muslim‑friendly infrastructure, Macaubusiness.com reported. The Macao Government Tourism Office (MGTO) is coordinating with Islamic groups to establish three certification tiers: halal restaurants, halal‑kitchen restaurants, and halal‑friendly restaurants. Officials note that current laws impose no barriers to setting up prayer spaces or halal-compliant facilities, and they are actively supporting applicants through licensing and technical assistance.
Macau made an influential debut in the Global Muslim Travel Index (GMTI) 2025, ranking 16th overall and 5th in the Muslim women‑friendly destination category among non‑OIC countries—boosting its appeal as an inclusive destination. The city also ranked among the top 10 for accessibility for Muslim travelers with special needs. To elevate its offerings, MGTO launched the “Macao for Muslim Travelers – Halal Travel Guide” and introduced a Halal Horizons Pavilion at the 13th Macao International Travel Expo (MITE), featuring certified halal businesses and a simulated prayer space.
Macau’s push includes plans for a dedicated Muslim‑friendly webpage highlighting halal hotels, prayer facilities, and compliant souvenirs. Multiple restaurants and enterprises have already received halal certification, demonstrating the SAR’s growing readiness to welcome Muslim tourism.
