Drone Strikes on Markets in Sudan Leave More Than 90 Dead and Injured

At least 92 people were killed or injured after two drone strikes targeted markets in southwestern Sudan, according to a report by Agence France-Presse on Sunday.

A doctor at Abu Zabad Hospital said one drone struck the Abu Zabad market while another targeted the market in Wad Banda in West Kordofan on Saturday. The attacks reportedly killed 33 people and injured 59 others, who are currently receiving treatment at the hospital, which is facing severe shortages of medicines and medical equipment.

Local resident Hamad Abdullah said residents buried 20 victims following the strike on the Abu Zabad market, adding that four of the deceased were his relatives who worked at the market.

A military source denied the allegations that the strikes targeted civilians, telling AFP that the Sudanese Armed Forces do not attack civilian areas. The source, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said the army targets only rebel forces, their equipment, and weapons depots.

Abu Zabad is located about 15 kilometers from Wad Banda. The Kordofan region, rich in oil and agricultural resources, has become a key front line in the conflict after the Rapid Support Forces consolidated control over much of the Darfur region following the fall of El Fasher in October 2025.
