WHO Condemns Deadly Attack on Kindergarten and Hospital in Sudan
………..
The head of the World Health Organization (WHO) has condemned a deadly drone attack on a kindergarten and a hospital in Sudan that killed 114 people, the BBC. According to WHO data, the strike occurred on Thursday in the town of Kalogi in South Kordofan, where 63 children were among the dead. Local officials said drones struck the kindergarten, then the hospital, and a third time as civilians attempted rescue efforts.
The Rapid Support Forces (RSF) were accused of carrying out the attack by both the Sudanese army and the Sudan Doctors’ Network, though the group has not commented. WHO chief Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus described the assault as “senseless,” noting that survivors had been transferred to Abu Jebaiha Hospital and that emergency calls for blood and medical supplies were underway. He also said paramedics came under fire while transporting the wounded.
The attack comes as fighting intensifies across the Kordofan region, a frontline in Sudan’s civil war that began in April 2023 between the army and the RSF. In a separate development, the RSF announced control of the Heglig oil field, a major energy hub. Army sources said troops withdrew to prevent damage to the facilities, which are critical for both Sudanese and South Sudanese oil revenues.
