Germany, Jordan, and UK Urge Immediate Ceasefire as Fighting in Sudan Escalates, Displacing Tens of Thousands

Germany, Jordan, and the United Kingdom have jointly called for an immediate ceasefire in Sudan, warning that the country is facing an “apocalyptic” humanitarian crisis following the fall of El Fasher, the capital of North Darfur, to the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF).
More details in the following report:
According to JURIST, the appeal, made during the Manama Dialogue 2025 in Bahrain, came amid reports of widespread atrocities and famine in Darfur and Kordofan. UK Foreign Secretary Yvette Cooper said the international community’s inaction was enabling “atrocities, mass executions, starvation, and the use of rape as a weapon of war,” describing Sudan as the world’s largest humanitarian crisis of the 21st century. Her remarks were echoed by Jordanian Foreign Minister Ayman Safadi, who criticized the global silence, and German officials, who demanded unimpeded humanitarian access.
According to the UN’s International Organization for Migration, more than 36,000 people have fled North Kordofan since the fall of El Fasher on October 26, most heading to Tawila, which already shelters over 650,000 displaced people. The World Health Organization reported at least 460 people killed at a hospital in El Fasher during RSF assaults, while the International Criminal Court (ICC) confirmed it is collecting evidence of mass killings, rapes, and abductions.
Mirjana Spoljaric, president of the International Committee of the Red Cross, described the situation as “horrific,” saying tens of thousands remain trapped without food or medical aid. The UN’s famine monitoring agency confirmed that famine conditions have already been detected in El Fasher and Kadugli.
Sudan’s war, which began in April 2023 between the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) and the RSF, has killed over 150,000 people and displaced 14 million, according to UN estimates. Pope Leo XIV and Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan have also appealed for an end to the violence, as calls grow for the RSF to be designated a terrorist organization over alleged war crimes.
