Sudanese Cities Face Severe Famine Amid Ongoing Conflict
……………..

Thousands of civilians in Sudan’s besieged cities in the west and south are enduring a severe humanitarian crisis, with many forced to eat tree leaves as food supplies dwindle. The situation has worsened amid ongoing clashes between the Sudanese army and Rapid Support Forces (RSF), which have cut off access to aid in several areas.

The conflict, now over two years long, has killed tens of thousands and left millions at risk of famine in cities including Al-Fashir in North Darfur, and Kadugli and Dilling in South Kordofan. RSF forces have maintained blockades for more than 500 days, allowing aid to reach residents only in limited quantities, if at all.

Civilians rely on communal kitchens and improvised shelters, while access to medical care is minimal. UN officials report that those trying to leave the besieged areas face threats of killing, abduction, and extortion. Aid organizations, including UNICEF and the World Food Programme, warn that humanitarian shipments are being looted or sold by armed groups instead of reaching those in need.

UNICEF reports over 63,000 children in South Kordofan suffer from severe malnutrition, underscoring the urgent need for unimpeded aid. Local committees describe Al-Fashir as a “bleeding open morgue,” highlighting the daily toll of conflict and the critical need for international intervention.
