Dengue Fever Cases Surge Amid Sudan’s Ongoing Conflict
…………..
Sudan’s health minister said tens of thousands of people have been affected by dengue fever and other diseases as seasonal rains strain hospitals and infrastructure already weakened by war, SABC News reported. The country, devastated by nearly 30 months of conflict between the army and the Rapid Support Forces, is experiencing unusually high outbreaks of dengue fever, cholera, and malaria.
The Ministry of Health recorded more than 2,000 dengue cases nationwide in the week ending Tuesday, mostly in Khartoum, though officials believe the true toll is far higher. Minister Haitham Mohamed Ibrahim estimated that 80% of infections are mild and go unreported, suggesting tens of thousands may have fallen ill recently.
The rainy season has created widespread stagnant water, providing breeding grounds for mosquitoes, while power outages and damaged water systems have forced families to store water at home. Residents in Omdurman expressed frustration over limited government response.
