Sudan’s Ministry of Health reported a significant surge in cholera cases, recording 1,210 new infections and 36 deaths in just one week. Since the outbreak began in August 2024, total cases have reached 102,831, with 2,561 fatalities. The ministry noted varying infection rates across Sudan’s states but did not specify which were most affected. The World Health Organization confirmed cholera cases in all 18 states as of early August.

This health crisis unfolds amid ongoing conflict between Sudan’s army and Rapid Support Forces, which began in April 2023. The fighting has resulted in over 20,000 deaths and displaced approximately 15 million people, with some studies estimating casualties as high as 130,000. The outbreak further strains Sudan’s fragile healthcare system already impacted by the prolonged conflict.
