Sudan Reports Over 1,300 New Cholera Cases and 18 Deaths in One Week

Sudan’s Health Ministry announced on Tuesday that 1,307 new cholera cases and 18 related deaths were recorded over the week of July 12 to 18, Anadolu Agency reported. These cases were reported across 12 of Sudan’s 18 states, bringing the total number of infections since the outbreak began in August 2024 to 91,034, with 2,302 deaths reported in 17 states.

The highest number of new cases last week was in Tawila, North Darfur, with 519 infections, followed by 236 cases in Qeissan, Blue Nile State. This marks an increase compared to the previous week (July 5–11), when 674 cholera cases and 13 deaths were reported.

The cholera outbreak is occurring amid a wider collapse of Sudan’s infrastructure resulting from ongoing conflict between the Sudanese army and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF). The fighting, which began in April 2023, has caused over 20,000 deaths and displaced 14 million people according to the UN and local officials. However, research from U.S. universities estimates the death toll to be closer to 130,000.
