The World Health Organization (WHO) has strongly condemned what it called a “horrific attack” on Al-Mujlad Hospital in Sudan’s West Kordofan state, which left more than 40 people dead, including six children and five healthcare workers. The strike, which occurred on June 22, is among the deadliest targeting medical facilities since the outbreak of civil war in April 2023.

WHO Director-General Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus described the incident as “a tragedy that cannot be ignored,” urging an immediate end to all attacks on healthcare facilities. The hospital, the only functioning one in the region, was reportedly hit while treating civilians, according to Sudanese Doctors’ Association and Emergency Lawyers.

Responsibility for the strike remains contested, with the Rapid Support Forces blaming the Sudanese army, while civil groups allege the army targeted the site to flush out RSF fighters. As the conflict escalates, humanitarian groups warn of a collapsing health system and rising threats to displaced children amid severe funding shortages.
