UN Releases $110 Million in Emergency Aid Amid Funding Cuts

The United Nations has allocated $110 million from its emergency fund to address neglected crises worldwide, including the ongoing humanitarian situation in Sudan, Arab News reported. This decision comes in response to significant funding cuts from major donors, particularly the United States, which recently announced the cancellation of nearly 10,000 foreign aid grants worth almost $60 billion.
Tom Fletcher, Under-Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs, emphasized that despite these brutal funding cuts, humanitarian needs remain critical for countries affected by conflict and climate change. The UN is seeking $45 billion in 2025 to assist approximately 185 million people facing starvation and displacement, yet has only received 5% of this amount so far.
The emergency funds will primarily target underfunded crises in Africa, Asia, and Latin America, with about one-third designated for Sudan, where nearly two years of civil war have resulted in widespread hunger and displacement. Neighboring Chad, which hosts over a million Sudanese refugees, will also receive support.
