Artillery Shelling in Sudan Claims 120 Civilians
At least 120 civilians were killed in artillery shelling on Wednesday in western Omdurman as clashes between the Sudanese army and paramilitary forces escalated, Arab News reported. Rescuers reported a critical shortage of medical supplies, complicating efforts to treat numerous wounded individuals in the capital’s twin city.
Since April 2023, Sudan has been embroiled in conflict between rival military factions. Most of Omdurman is under army control, while the Rapid Support Forces hold parts of Khartoum North and other areas of the capital. Residents on both sides of the Nile frequently report shelling, with bombs and shrapnel hitting homes and civilians.
The situation has worsened in recent weeks, with a drone attack by paramilitary forces leaving Port Sudan without power after striking a hydroelectric dam. The ongoing war has resulted in up to 150,000 deaths, displaced over 12 million people, and pushed many Sudanese to the brink of famine.
