Sudan Faces Largest Humanitarian Crisis Ever Recorded

Sudan is experiencing its most severe humanitarian crisis, Arab News reported citing the International Rescue Committee (IRC). After 20 months of conflict between the Sudanese army and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces, the country now accounts for 10% of the global humanitarian needs, despite housing less than 1% of the world’s population.

Since April 2023, the war has resulted in tens of thousands of deaths and displaced over 12 million people. Nearly 9 million are internally displaced, primarily in areas with devastated infrastructure, facing mass starvation. The United Nations reports that around 26 million people—about half the population—are facing acute hunger.

Famine has been declared in the Zamzam displacement camp, and the IRC warns of a potential total humanitarian collapse. This crisis marks Sudan as the highest-ranked country on the IRC’s 2025 Emergency Watchlist for the second consecutive year, highlighting an urgent need for international assistance.
