Sudan Conflict Escalates as Paramilitaries Capture Key State Capital

Sudan’s year-long war intensified on Saturday as paramilitary forces (RSF) seized Singa, the capital of Sennar state, Arab News reported today.

Residents reported heavy fighting and thousands fleeing the violence, the source mentioned.

The RSF, led by General Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo, are locked in a power struggle with Sudan’s army since April 2023. The conflict has displaced millions, triggered a hunger crisis, and left tens of thousands dead.

This capture tightens the RSF’s grip around Port Sudan, the current base for the army, government, and UN agencies. The RSF now controls most of Khartoum, central Al-Jazira state, vast Darfur region, and parts of Kordofan.

Meanwhile, thousands flee Singa eastward towards the Blue Nile, adding to the already massive population of displaced people in Sennar. The UN recently warned of severe food insecurity for nearly 26 million Sudanese.
