Catastrophic Food Shortages Loom for Over 750,000 in Sudan, Famine Watchdog Says
According to a preliminary UN projection, an estimated 756,000 people in Sudan could face catastrophic food shortages by September, Reuters reported yesterday.
This grim forecast reflects Sudan’s rapidly deteriorating situation, with 25.6 million people, or 54% of the population, now facing critical food insecurity – including over 9 million in emergency or worse conditions.
The latest Integrated Food Security Phase Classification (IPC) analysis, pending approval from Sudan’s military government, shows a sharp increase from December’s estimate of 17.7 million people facing high food insecurity.
Security threats, roadblocks and communications issues have hindered the IPC’s ability to fully assess the crisis.
Authorities have previously denied the existence of famine conditions in the war-torn country.
