MSF: Sudan’s al-Fashir main hospital closed after RSF attack

In the latest escalation of the conflict in Sudan, the main hospital in the city of al-Fashir has been attacked and put out of service by the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF), Reuters reported yesterday.

The city, home to over 1.8 million residents and displaced people, has become a new front in the war between the Sudanese army and the RSF that began in April 2023.

The RSF, which controls the capital Khartoum and much of western Sudan, is now seeking to advance further. This has led to a dire situation, with the United Nations warning that the people of Sudan are at “imminent risk of famine”. Over 130,000 people have fled their homes in al-Fashir due to the heavy fighting in recent months.

From May 10 to June 6, some 1,315 wounded arrived at the facility and 208 people have died there, but many people are not able to reach the hospital due to the fighting.
