Violent Clashes Erupt Between Sudanese Army, Paramilitary Forces
Intense fighting has broken out between the Sudanese army and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) in multiple states across Sudan, Anadolu Agency reported yesterday.
The clashes, which began on Sunday, have been reported in the capital Khartoum, as well as the states of Al Jazirah and White Nile. Eyewitnesses stated that the army carried out airstrikes on areas where the RSF had gathered, particularly around the Al-Jaili Petroleum Refinery north of Khartoum. Thick plumes of smoke could be seen rising from the targeted sites.
While the RSF appears to control large swaths of the city of Bahri, north of Khartoum, the army has maintained a presence in several neighborhoods and at military bases in the area. Fighting has also resumed in the city of El Fasher, with the army launching airstrikes on RSF gatherings to the east of the city.
The recent violence comes as the UN and other international organizations have issued urgent calls for a ceasefire to prevent a looming humanitarian disaster. Since mid-April 2022, the conflict between the Sudanese army and RSF has left an estimated 15,000 dead and displaced over 8 million people.
