UN committee urges cessation of ethnic violence in Sudan

The UN Committee on the Elimination of Racial Discrimination (CERD) on Tuesday urged an end to ethnic violence in Sudan, calling on all parties to address and prevent further escalation of violence, incitement to racial hatred, and racist hate speech.

According to Anadolu Agency, the UN statement also called on the country’s army and paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) to cease hostilities and to stop further violations and abuses of international human rights and humanitarian law.

The committee expressed shock at the reports of death, destruction, and attacks, and urged Sudan to ensure that such acts are investigated and adequately punished, the news agency added.

Additionally, UN has called for promoting dialogue between different ethnic communities to foster tolerance and achieve peace.

The conflict in Sudan began on April 15, 2023, and has caused a devastating humanitarian crisis, with nearly 16,000 people killed and millions displaced.
