Sudan requires ‘immediate action’ on hunger to prevent widespread fatality, UN-backed report says

The United Nations-backed global authority on food security warned on Friday of an urgent need to prevent a catastrophic hunger crisis in Sudan, Reuters reported.

Due to the war, the Integrated Food Security Phase Classification (IPC) has been unable to issue an update but expressed major concern about the deteriorating situation, the article noted.

The raging war has caused nearly 25 million people to need aid, with 8 million civilians displaced, the report highlights.

The IPC estimated that nearly 5 million people, including 3.6 million children under five and 1.2 million pregnant and lactating women, are acutely malnourished.

It also noted a 46% decrease in cereal production due to fighting in primary crop production areas, urging immediate action to prevent famine and address the acute food insecurity and malnutrition.
