More than 95 percent of population in Sudan unable to purchase a meal per day: WFP
Sudan is on the brink of collapse after ten months of war, with less than five percent of the population able to afford a square meal a day, TRTWORLD reported in an article.
Since last April, Sudan has been plagued by fighting between the regular army and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces, which has killed thousands and resulted in what the United Nations describes as “the world’s largest displacement crisis”.
According to official figures, the conflict has displaced 10.7 million people, and 18 million are facing acute food insecurity.
Aid delivery is hindered by limited access and underfunding, making it difficult to assess the extent of the crisis, aid groups have warned.
The fertile agricultural regions have been affected by the fighting, leading to deserted farms and a looming hunger season, the locals say.
The most populous Muslim-majority country in Africa, with 97% identifying as followers of Islam, is now described as being on the verge of collapse, with a bleak future ahead.
