Former South Korean president Yoon Suk Yeol was sent back to jail on Thursday after the Seoul Central District Court approved a detention warrant linked to an investigation into his attempted martial law declaration last year, media outlets reported. Prosecutors argued Yoon might destroy evidence, prompting the court to grant the request.

Yoon, 64, already faces insurrection charges over the December decree, which could lead to life imprisonment or the death penalty. He previously spent 52 days in detention before being released on a technicality four months ago. Parliament impeached Yoon in April, a decision later upheld by the constitutional court, fueling months of political unrest.

The special counsel’s investigation, launched after President Lee Jae Myung’s election in June, is also examining whether Yoon deliberately escalated tensions with North Korea. Yoon, who wore a dark suit and red tie to Wednesday’s hearing, has denied wrongdoing. His supporters rallied outside the court amid tight security.
