Pisa Mosque, Islamic Cultural Center Project Revived as Fundraising Campaign Begins

A long-delayed project to build a mosque and Islamic cultural center in the Italian city of Pisa has gained new momentum, with the Albanian Islamic Cultural Association of Pisa encouraging the local Muslim community to contribute to its completion.

The project is planned for an area of around 4,000 square meters in the Porta a Lucca district, between the University Sports Center and Via del Brennero. A symbolic groundbreaking ceremony was recently held at the site, but construction work has not yet begun.

The revised project, estimated to cost between €3 million and €4 million, includes a mosque with a domed prayer hall capable of accommodating several hundred worshippers, alongside a two-story Islamic cultural center intended for cultural, social and community activities. The association has described the project as a modern Islamic center combining worship, education and cultural and social activities.

Funding remains one of the main challenges facing the project. An online fundraising campaign has been launched to help secure the resources needed for construction. According to Il Tirreno, the campaign had raised slightly more than €11,000 by June 18, 2026.

The project dates back more than a decade and has undergone several revisions because of financial, planning and administrative obstacles. The current proposal is a scaled-down version of an earlier plan that included a 25-meter minaret and was estimated to cost around €5 million.
