Japan Pledges $12 Million Through World Bank to Support Palestinian Health and Education
————————————-
Japan has announced a $12 million contribution to aid health and education services in the Palestinian territories, channelled through the World Bank’s Palestinian Fund for Reconstruction and Development (PFRD), Arab News reported today.
Officials said the funding aims to address fiscal shortfalls that have strained public services amid ongoing conflict and tightening restrictions on the Palestinian Authority in the West Bank. The education and health sectors, which together account for roughly 60 percent of total wage costs, have been especially affected by wage delays that threaten the operation of schools and health facilities.
Under the programme, support for the health sector will deliver clinic services to around 8,040 people across six public hospitals, as well as essential medical equipment, medicines and supplies. The PFRD initiative also includes projects focused on human capital development and private sector growth to aid long‑term recovery efforts in Gaza.
In a statement, Japan reaffirmed its commitment to supporting the resilience of Palestinian institutions and the well‑being of their citizens “in these challenging times,” underscoring continued partnership with international development efforts.
