Muslim Civil Rights Group Urges University to Discipline Harvard Republican Club Over Eid Post

A U.S.-based Muslim civil rights organization has called on Harvard University to take disciplinary action against the Harvard Republican Club over a social media post criticizing a campus Eid celebration.

The Council on American-Islamic Relations said the club’s April 4 post about an Eid al-Fitr event organized by the Harvard Islamic Society targeted Muslim students and contributed to a hostile campus environment. In a letter to Harvard President Alan Garber, the group argued that the post’s language—describing the university as “captured”—portrayed Muslim students as outsiders and amounted to discriminatory harassment.

The post alleged that the celebration disrupted students with “loud prayers and music” and raised concerns about security. However, event organizers said attendees had pre-registered and disputed claims about the nature of the gathering.

CAIR also noted that it found no similar criticism on the club’s social media toward events held by other religious or student groups, raising concerns about selective targeting. The organization urged Harvard to remove the post, publicly condemn anti-Muslim bias, and adopt clearer policies addressing Islamophobia.

Harvard has not publicly commented on the request. However, a university spokesperson confirmed that the Harvard Republican Club is under investigation by the Dean of Students Office following a complaint alleging policy violations.

Leaders of the Harvard Islamic Society have also criticized the post, describing it as inaccurate and discriminatory.
