U.S. Congressman’s Remarks on Muslims Spark Widespread Backlash

A Republican member of the U.S. Congress, Andy Ogles of Tennessee, has drawn widespread criticism after making remarks suggesting that Muslims “have no place in American society,” comments that have circulated widely on social media and prompted concern among Muslim communities.

The statements were particularly controversial in Ogles’ congressional district in central Tennessee, which includes parts of Nashville and is home to one of the largest Muslim populations in the southern United States. Local Muslim residents and community leaders said the remarks could fuel harassment and discrimination.

According to Time, Sabina Mohyuddin, president of the American Muslim Advisory Council in Tennessee, said Ogles appeared to be attempting to gain political attention during the election season by targeting Muslims. She estimated that about 30,000 Muslims live in the district.

In recent days, Ogles reportedly escalated his rhetoric in social media posts, claiming that the United States was founded on “English Christian culture” and arguing that multiculturalism is absent from the U.S. Constitution. He also called for the deportation of Muslims, including naturalized U.S. citizens, and suggested legislation that would effectively ban Muslim immigration.

The controversy comes as Ogles prepares to compete in the Republican primary election scheduled for August 6, with several Democratic candidates also contesting the seat.

Civil rights groups, including Council on American-Islamic Relations, have condemned such rhetoric, warning that it contributes to growing hostility toward Muslims in the United States. The organization reported 8,683 complaints of discrimination and bias incidents in 2025, the highest annual total since it began tracking such cases nearly three decades ago.
