Civil defense teams in the Gaza Strip recovered the bodies of 30 members of a single family from the debris of a destroyed home in western Gaza City on Tuesday, Anadolu Agency reported. According to a statement from Gaza’s Civil Defense, the victims belonged to the Salem family and were killed in an Israeli airstrike that struck their house in the al-Rimal neighborhood on Dec. 19, 2023.

Authorities believe the total number of family members killed in the attack may reach 60. The recovery marked the first operation in a newly organized campaign aimed at locating thousands of Palestinians believed to remain buried under the rubble of destroyed buildings across Gaza.

Civil Defense officials said search efforts will continue with limited resources, including basic excavation equipment. Palestinian authorities say Israeli military operations have devastated large parts of the enclave. Since October 2023, nearly 70,700 Palestinians have been killed and more than 171,000 injured, most of them women and children.
