Nearly Half of 2025 Journalist Killings Occurred in Gaza, RSF Reports

According to RSF’s 2025 annual assessment, 67 journalists worldwide were killed between December 2024 and December 2025 — the highest total in several years. Of those, 29 — roughly 43% — were slain in Gaza, making the territory the deadliest place for journalists in the world this year.

According to Al Jazeera, RSF identified Israeli armed forces as responsible for the majority of these deaths. Its director‑general, Thibaut Bruttin, condemned the “targeted killings” of media workers and accused global powers of failing to protect journalists in conflict zones.

Beyond Gaza, other dangerous regions included Mexico — the second most lethal country for journalists in 2025 with nine reported killings — as well as Ukraine and Sudan. RSF noted that over 79% of the journalist deaths globally occurred in zones of war or under control of armed groups or criminal networks.

In addition to fatalities, the report highlights a growing crisis of press suppression: as of December 1, 2025, 503 journalists remain imprisoned worldwide, with China, Russia, and Myanmar among the worst offenders.

RSF called on governments and international organisations to halt the impunity and ensure protection for journalists working in conflict areas — warning that the steady rise in targeted killings threatens not just reporters, but the global right to information.
