On the 33rd anniversary of the Babri Masjid demolition (December 6, 1992), Tehreek Muslim Shabban president and Telangana Muslim Joint Action Committee convenor Mohd Mustaq Malik declared plans to construct a memorial mosque in Hyderabad modelled on the historic Babri Masjid, Muslim Mirror reported.

Addressing a large public meeting in Hyderabad on Saturday, Malik announced: “I have seen Muslims in Murshidabad carrying bricks on their shoulders and walking 200 kilometres to build a replica of Babri Masjid. I have nurtured this dream since the 2019 Supreme Court verdict. If Allah wills, a mosque in memory of Babri Masjid will definitely be built here in Hyderabad.”

He expressed confidence that, despite expected opposition and hurdles, the project would be grounded by December 2025 and reach a significant construction milestone within the next year.

The announcement comes days after suspended Trinamool Congress leader Humayun Kabir laid the foundation stone for a similar Babri Masjid replica mosque in Rejinagar, Murshidabad district of West Bengal. Amid heavy security, Kabir described the initiative as “applying a small balm” to the deep wound inflicted on Muslims thirty-three years ago when the 16th-century mosque was demolished by a Hindu nationalist mob in Ayodhya.

Thousands of supporters reportedly joined Kabir in the foundation ceremony, signalling growing sentiment among sections of the community to symbolically reconstruct the lost heritage.

Malik acknowledged that legal and political challenges are anticipated but remained resolute, stating the Hyderabad memorial would serve as both a place of worship and a reminder of the 1992 events that triggered nationwide communal riots, leaving over 2,000 people dead, mostly Muslims.

Community leaders say multiple such replica and memorial projects are now being planned across India to commemorate the demolished structure.
