UK Expected to Recognize Palestinian State Following Trump’s Visit

Britain is set to formally recognize a Palestinian state this weekend, following the conclusion of former U.S. President Donald Trump’s state visit. According to The Times, the announcement will come after Trump departs the UK on Thursday. Prime Minister Keir Starmer had previously warned that recognition would proceed unless Israel took concrete steps to ease the humanitarian crisis in Gaza and agreed to a ceasefire in its nearly two-year conflict with Hamas.

The UK joins France, Canada, and Australia, which have also indicated plans to recognize Palestinian statehood this month. Starmer, facing internal pressure from members of the Labour Party to adopt a firmer stance on the conflict, reiterated his position ahead of the upcoming United Nations General Assembly. While Britain has historically supported a two-state solution, this would mark its first formal recognition of Palestinian statehood.
