UN: Over 36,000 displaced in Gaza amid latest Israeli attacks

The United Nations has recently announced that Israeli attacks have resulted in displacement of more than 36,000 people. The displaced are “fleeing in fear for their lives,” with many moving to the southern parts of the enclave, Anadolu Agency reported.

The United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) reported that between August 14 and August 26, over 36,200 people were displaced, with more than 11,600 moving from northern Gaza to the south. The majority of these people came from neighborhoods in Gaza City, with two-thirds heading to Deir al-Balah and nearly a third to Khan Younis.

The Israeli military has issued a new displacement order for a one-square-kilometer area in Gaza City, further contributing to the displacement. UN spokesperson Stephane Dujarric noted that aid operations remain severely restricted. On one day, for example, six out of 12 planned missions requiring Israeli coordination were facilitated, while three were impeded, two were canceled, and one was “outright denied.”

The latest displacement comes amid a broader humanitarian crisis in the enclave. The UN has stated that at least 1.9 million people, or about 90% of Gaza’s population, have been displaced during the war. Additionally, the Ministry of Health in Gaza reported that the total number of Palestinians killed since October 2023 has reached over 62,000. The conflict has also led to a severe food crisis, with a famine declared in Gaza City.

The International Court of Justice is hearing a genocide case against Israel, while the International Criminal Court (ICC) has issued arrest warrants for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and his former Defense Minister Yoav Gallant on charges of war crimes and crimes against humanity in Gaza.
