The United Nations World Food Programme (WFP) has warned that nearly half a million Palestinians in Gaza are on the brink of famine, stressing the urgent need for a ceasefire to expand humanitarian aid in the besieged territory.

According to the agency, current assistance reaching Gaza covers only 47 percent of its daily target. It said food distribution, hot meal services, and bakery operations cannot resume without a significant increase in supplies. The WFP emphasized that only a cessation of hostilities would allow aid to reach those most in need.

Meanwhile, the UN Relief and Works Agency (UNRWA) reported that over one million women and girls in Gaza face the risk of widespread famine due to the ongoing Israeli blockade and war since October 7, 2023.
