UN Security Council to hold emergency meeting on Israel’s plans to take over Gaza

The UN Security Council is scheduled to hold an emergency meeting on Sunday to discuss Israel’s plans to take control of Gaza City, Anadolu Agency reported. The meeting was requested by the United Kingdom, Denmark, France, Greece, and Slovenia following an announcement by Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu that Israel’s military would prepare to occupy the city.

The plan has been met with widespread condemnation from international bodies and countries, including the UN Secretary-General, who called it a “dangerous escalation” that could worsen the already catastrophic humanitarian situation in Gaza. The UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) has reported that aid entering the region is far below the required amount to prevent famine. Germany also announced it would not authorize the export of military equipment to Israel that could be used in Gaza.

According to a statement from the Israeli Prime Minister’s office, Israel’s plan is to take control of Gaza City while providing humanitarian aid to civilians outside the combat zones. The plan’s objectives include disarming Hamas, returning all hostages, and establishing a new civilian administration. However, the plan has also been met with criticism within Israel from opposition leaders and families of hostages, who fear it will endanger the lives of the remaining captives.
