Malta will officially recognize the State of Palestine during the United Nations General Assembly in September, Prime Minister Robert Abela announced Tuesday evening, as reported by Reuters. The declaration follows similar commitments by the United Kingdom and France in recent days.

In a statement on Facebook, Abela said Malta’s decision underscores its dedication to promoting lasting peace in the Middle East. The move comes amid growing domestic calls for recognition, with members of Abela’s own government and the centre-right Opposition urging immediate action.

Malta has long supported Palestinian rights and the two-state solution. While Abela initially revealed plans for recognition during a May announcement tied to a UN conference scheduled for June, the event was later postponed.

Earlier this year, Ireland, Norway, and Spain formally recognized Palestine as an independent state, adding momentum to European diplomatic efforts in support of Palestinian statehood.
