Philippines Declares November 7 a National Holiday Marking Arrival of Islam
—————————-
In a historic move acknowledging its rich religious and cultural heritage, the Philippine government has officially declared November 7 a special national holiday each year. This decision commemorates the arrival of Islam in the country and honors the establishment of its first mosque on Simunul Island in Tawi-Tawi province, built by the Arab missionary Sheikh Karim Al-Makhdum in 1380 AD.

This declaration, enshrined in Republic Act No. 12228, highlights the deep-rooted Islamic history in the Philippines, which predates European colonization by centuries. The act recognizes Islam’s message of monotheism, justice, and peace that spread across the archipelago.

The new national holiday aims to emphasize the significant contributions of Muslims to the formation of Filipino identity and to foster multiculturalism and religious diversity within the nation. It also serves as a bridge for reconciliation among different segments of Philippine society by acknowledging an Islamic history spanning more than six centuries.
