Over 70% of Gaza Schools Damaged in Israeli Attacks: UN Report

The UN Relief and Works Agency for Palestinian Refugees (UNRWA) reported Monday that more than 70% of schools in Gaza have been directly struck by Israeli military operations since October 2023, Anadolu Agency reported. According to the agency, 88% of Gaza’s educational facilities now require extensive reconstruction, including 162 UNRWA-run schools that previously served hundreds of thousands of students.
UNRWA condemned the conflict’s devastating impact on children, stating, “Education in Gaza is a casualty of war,” with widespread displacement, trauma, and disrupted schooling. The latest escalation began on March 18, 2025, when Israel resumed its offensive, breaking a January ceasefire and prisoner exchange deal.
The ongoing assault has killed approximately 51,000 Palestinians, predominantly women and children, since October 2023. In November 2024, the International Criminal Court (ICC) issued arrest warrants for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and ex-Defense Minister Yoav Gallant over alleged war crimes and crimes against humanity. Israel also faces genocide accusations at the International Court of Justice (ICJ) for its Gaza campaign.
