Protests Erupt Across Arab World Calling for End to Israeli Assault on Gaza

Crowds gathered in various cities throughout the Arab world on Monday, demanding an end to Israel’s ongoing military offensive in the Gaza Strip, Anadolu Agency reported. In Tunis, hundreds of students filled Avenue Habib Bourguiba, waving Palestinian and Hamas flags, and later marched from the Municipal Theatre to the French Embassy.

In Morocco, trade unions announced a general strike across the country, including in educational institutions, to highlight calls for an end to the Israeli war on Gaza. Meanwhile, hundreds rallied in Damascus, Syria, protesting against Israeli attacks on both Syria and the Palestinian people, as reported by the state news agency SANA.

Palestinian factions have urged global supporters to participate in a general strike on Monday to increase pressure on Israel to cease its violent campaign in Gaza. Since renewing its assault on March 18, the Israeli army has reportedly killed nearly 1,400 people and injured over 3,400, breaking a January ceasefire and prisoner exchange agreement.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has pledged to intensify attacks on Gaza amid efforts to implement a controversial plan aimed at displacing Palestinians. Since October 2023, more than 50,700 Palestinians, predominantly women and children, have lost their lives in the conflict. The International Criminal Court issued arrest warrants last November for Netanyahu and former Defense Minister Yoav Gallant for war crimes and crimes against humanity, while Israel also faces a genocide case at the International Court of Justice regarding its actions in Gaza.
