UNRWA Opens 130 Temporary Learning Centers in Gaza for 47,000 Children

The United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA) announced on Saturday the opening of 130 temporary educational centers across Gaza, allowing approximately 47,000 children to resume in-person learning, Anadolu Agency reported. UNRWA Commissioner-General Philippe Lazzarini emphasized that “education for children restores some hope,” aiding their healing and reconnection with childhood amidst ongoing trauma.
Lazzarini noted that over 270,000 boys and girls are enrolled in UNRWA’s education program, receiving essential instruction in subjects like Arabic, English, mathematics, and science. He reaffirmed that UNRWA remains the largest provider of emergency learning and psychosocial support in the region.
Despite the reopening of these centers, Lazzarini acknowledged the significant challenges that lie ahead, stressing the urgency to prevent a lost generation of Palestinian children. The backdrop of this initiative comes amid ongoing violence, with over 48,500 Palestinians reported killed since October 2023, predominantly women and children, due to the ongoing conflict.
