EU Resumes Rafah Border Crossing Mission

The European Union (EU) has resumed its civilian mission at the Rafah border crossing between Gaza and Egypt, a critical access point for the Palestinian territory, Arab News reported. Kaja Kallas, the EU’s foreign policy chief, announced the mission’s restart, highlighting its potential role in supporting the ceasefire agreement between Israel and Hamas.

The mission will assist Palestinian border personnel and facilitate the transfer of individuals from Gaza, including those requiring medical care. The crossing is set to be managed by members of the Palestinian Authority alongside European monitors.

Initially operational in 2005, the EU Border Assistance Mission (EUBAM) was suspended in June 2007 following Hamas’ takeover of Gaza. The current deployment will allow for the passage of 50 injured militants and 50 wounded civilians, as well as an additional 100 individuals, likely students, on humanitarian grounds.

Italy and Germany are contributing personnel to the mission, with Italy sending seven paramilitary officers to support operations.
