Gaza Faces Daunting Reconstruction Challenge After Recent Conflict
The Gaza Strip is in dire need of reconstruction following extensive damage from Israeli airstrikes since October 7, 2023, Anadolu Agency reported. With over 157,000 Palestinians killed or injured, and thousands of homes, schools, and hospitals destroyed, the rebuilding effort is poised to be one of the largest in modern history.
A UN assessment indicated that two-thirds of Gaza’s structures have been damaged, with 163,778 buildings affected, including 52,564 completely destroyed. The financial cost of reconstruction is estimated at over $40 billion, with initial recovery efforts projected to take three to five years and cost between $2 billion and $3 billion.
Challenges include the Israeli blockade restricting construction materials, the presence of unexploded ordnance, and the need for extensive debris removal, estimated at 42 million tons.
As global attention shifts to Gaza’s reconstruction following a cease-fire between Israel and Hamas, experts emphasize that the process must center around the needs and rights of Palestinian residents. The future of Gaza’s reconstruction remains uncertain, with questions about leadership and funding, as well as concerns over preserving the region’s cultural and historical identity amidst development efforts.
